Pay for ambulance service staff

This page describes the pay arrangements for ambulance staff.

General information about pay in the NHS

Most jobs in the NHS are covered by the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay scales. This pay system covers all staff except doctors, dentists and the most senior managers. For information about pay for these professions see the pay information section in the medical or dental  sections.

In AfC the NHS job evaluation system determines a points score which is used to match jobs to one of the nine pay bands and determine levels of basic salary.

Each of the nine pay band has a number of pay points. Staff will normally progress to the next pay point annually until they reach the top of the pay band.  In addition to basic pay, there is also extra pay for staff who work in high cost areas such as around London.

Ambulance pay

Your career in the NHS ambulance services could start at an ambulance call taker or control assistant at Band 2, or in a patient transport service roles at Bands 2, 3 and 4. After appropriate training, if you worked as an ambulance technician you could typically be Band 4, with paramedics at Band 5 and the more specialist role of emergency care practitioner Band 6. Your earnings in front line operational roles are often enhanced with unsocial hours payments of up to 25% of basic salary which reflects the 24 hour nature of the service. There are promotion opportunities for example to service area managers at Band 7, with further managerial roles attracting higher bandings.
